Join us for the annual tradition of EC Old School Champs at Eternal Weekend! We kick off the weekend with beers, deck brews, and some amazing special guests!
BACKGROUND:
For over a decade, mages from all over the world have gathered for Eternal Weekend and slung ancient cardboard while surrounded by friends. This is where 93/94 in the North American really took off -- a gathering of Wizards adhering to the rules of Eternal Central.
This event is designed to marry the #mtgunderground tradition of off-site booze-friendly unsanctioned 93/94 play with a desire by the T.O. to remember why we all started playing Old School at Eternal Weekend anyways -- EW is the greatest official Eternal Magic event of the year, and its hosts work hard to put it on for the community. Our goal is to honor the tradition that Jason Jaco began and complement the official Eternal Weekend itself.
FORMAT & TOURNAMENT STRUCTURE:
This is a 93/94 old school tournament with modern rules; except, mana burn still happens. Swiss rounds will scale with attendance. Expect approximately 7 rounds of Swiss. There will be no cut to Top 8, though we will conclude with an award ceremony prizing out to the Champion, Top 8, and several categories. Tournament Organizers will be on site to make judge calls. Draws are not allowed and players who go to time in a round without a winner declarable will resolve would-be draws via a Chaos Orb flip-off. As always, the number one rule in Old School is "don't be a dick."
We listened to feedback and have moved up the start time a bit so this doesn't go as late in the night. We are planning for 2:00 PM doors and 3:00 PM player's meeting, followed by Round 1 start.
If you can't make it for the official event on time, don't worry, this year we are adding a larger casual play area --- come by and join the party at anytime and jam games. OS, Sorcery, scribble ante, Revised40, Alpha40, 7 points singleton, X points, Premodern, you name it -- we would love to have you drop in for a game. PastTimes themselves are also planning OS tournaments on site at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center Friday through Sunday, and as always we encourage you to support Vintage & Legacy Champs!.
DECK CONSTRUCTION / CARDS ALLOWED:
Deck Construction Rules and Legal Sets can be found at Eternal Central...Yes, gold-bordered cards from Collector's Edition, International Edition, retro-frame M30, and Pro Tour decks are legal -- despite PastTimes not allowing them at EW proper -- as are non-foil reprints with the original frame and art that was originally featured in a 1993 or 1994 set. Artist Proofs are welcome. Proxies, counterfeits, and playtest cards are not allowed. "Champion / Prize" Power (from previous events by this T.O./host are allowed.)
PRE-REGISTRATION:
Registering thru TopDeck is required to guarantee a seat for this event. The entry fee of $55 + whatever processing fees TopDeck charges will be used to support the Elks Lodge, cover venue reservation costs, special guests, staff/overhead and unique pool of prizes and Old School swag. The entry fee is non-refundable.
THE VENUE, FOOD, AND DRINK:
The NAOS Magic Cup will be held at the Allegheny Elks Lodge, 339 in downtown Pittsburgh. It's a 10-15 minute walk from the David L. Lawrence convention center where EW is taking place. Neighborhood parking is available, but there is no designated parking lot. Remember to tip your bartender and the artist, and to patronize our exclusive vendor/sponsor, Dice City Games.
CHARITY:
One of our favorite elements of Old School is supporting charitable organizations. In addition to patronizing the charitable organization of the Elks, a portion of all proceeds will go to benefit Mutt Love Dog Rescue.

We are pleased to announce that legendary Old School artist Ken Meyer, Jr. will be making a rare public appearance as our guest of honor. Ken is the brilliant mind behind Old School and Premodern -era favorites such as Kird Ape, Guardian Beast, Erhnam Djinn, Mystic Remora, and Dark Ritual. PRIZES & DECKBUILDING CHALLENGES:
Prizes in ancient, altered cardboard will be awared to the Top 8 winners and a special prize to the declared Champion. Prizes for Spiciest Deck and Best Unpowered Deck will also be awarded (best upowered deck includes no Power 9 or Mishra's Workshop, but may contain other powerful restricted cards like Library of Alexandria, Bazaar of Baghdad, Wheel of Fortune, Sol Ring, etc.). "Everybody wins" some signed OS memento cards to take home but we are only doing these 10 top-heavy prizes this year so that people can go home at a decent hour!
