Muster/start time: 11AM

Where

Shuffle and Cut Melbourne, 243A Swan St, Richmond VIC 3121, Australia

Getting There

Public transport options

Arguably the simplest way to get to Richmond is via eastern bound trains. It is a 6 minute walk from East Richmond (on the rare occasions that trains stop there), otherwise it's a 15 minute walk from Richmond station.

Alternatively, there are several tram routes that are relatively close to the store like the route 78 and the route 70.

Parking

There is some unlimited parking options after 12:30 PM on Saturdays usually with an 11AM start time you can get one hour in before it expires. So driving is definitely worth considering.

Outside of street parking you could also look at some paid options near by. Some are just 15 minutes walk or you could try: Secure Parking - 100 Cubitt Street, 100 Cubitt St, Cremorne VIC 3121

Structure

4 x 80 minute rounds followed by a top 10 cut to finals. (Yes we will do a this structure even if we get below 32 players, more rounds means more fun!)

Overtime and Finals Timing

During Swiss, once time is called play will continue until the end of the turn. However, there will also be a hard 20 minute cap on overtime. If a winner cannot be decided in that time the match result will be considered a draw.

Additionally, each finals round will have a hard cap of 2.5 hours. After which time if a winner cannot be decided, the win will be awarded to the player in seat 1.

NOTE: We may add/remove time to the finals rounds depending on how the events of the day play out. The time cap will be disclosed prior to the finals round starting. Typically we are adding time and set the cap to finish roughly 15 minutes prior to the store closing.

We understand that these rule changes may not be ideal for some but these measures have been put in place for logistical reasons and for the consideration of event staff.

Event Cap

50 players (48 seated with 2 byes)

This is a strict cap as space in the store is limited.

Prizes

Excluding operational costs ($1-$2 per person which should total to ~$100 if the event sells out + $300 for judge fees if we have a judge), all of ticketing sales proceeds will be contributing to the prize pool.

The final prize pool will depend on total player numbers.

Here are some example total prize pool amounts (assuming $20 entry ticket and no judge):

  • 16 players - $304
  • 24 players - $456
  • 34 players - $612
  • 50 players - $900

The prizing distribution method will be decided by the top pod prior to the final round. They will be given three choices:

  1. Even split between 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th
  2. Tiered distribution: 1st - 30.4%, 2nd to 4th - 12%, 5th to 10th - 5.6%
  3. Winner takes all

For the least amount of feel bads, we do recommend even splitting. However, this choice will be 100% made by the top pod.

Prizing will be awarded to those who make top cut and will be awarded as store credit.

NOTE: If the top pod decides to split, they can still play for glory to be recognised for the win in our community and on edhtop16.com. If the top pod does not want to play out their final match, seed 1 will be recorded as the winner in topdeck.

Judging

UPDATE: Based on feedback we will not be getting a judge for this event.

In the past we have forgone to have a judge for our smaller events. However, based on player sentiment and feedback we are open to getting a judge especially if we approach numbers in the mid 30s. We are in the process of discussing this with the community to figure out what is desirable and will announce the outcome of this + pricing closer to the event date.

If we do not have a judge the MCL staff and Shuffle N Cut store staff will be happy to assist with any judge calls should they be required.

Play-test policy

This event will be play-test friendly.

You will need to use "test cards" that are printed in colour and utilize recognizable art. These printouts can be slipped in front of another card however the printout must not be seen from the top of the sleeve.

If you are using a mixed deck, that features real cards and print outs slipped in front of other cards we will require the real cards be double sleeves so that your deck can have a consistent thickness.

If you are using high quality play-test cards printed on card stock, this must be distinguishable from a real magic card such that it cannot be considered as a counterfeit. The MCL does not condone counterfeits in anyway.

Alters and Card Art

CEDH is a format where the game state can be quite complicated (especially with it being a 4 player format). Card recognisability can play a significant role in ensuring players and judges can have a clear understanding of the game's current board state.

In addition to requiring proxies that use official magic art, we require that any altered cards or cards with alter sleeves keep the recognisability of the original art work in tact.

Some general guidelines to follow when it comes to alters:

  • Art work extensions are typically fine. Ideally the rules text is still clear and readable.
  • Full art replacements will not be accepted.
  • Partial modifications like small stickers or the addition of new characters will be at the judges discretion.

With altered cards there can be a lot of gray area as the possibilities are practically endless. If you are unsure about whether your altered card will be acceptable, we recommend that you either bring a spare copy of the card with the official magic art (proxy or real), and/or you seek head judge approval prior to the start of the tournament.
