Rose City Premodern Tournament of Champions

Magic: The Gathering: Premodern

About this event

Event Information

The Tournament of Champions is an invitational charity event put on by Rose City Premodern. Players can qualify for the event by winning first place in a 9+ player paper Premodern event in 2026. Players will be asked to verify their win when signing up for the Tournament of Champions by sharing a link to TCDecks or mtgtop8 with the results.

The Tournament of Champions is hosted by Guardian Games, a cornerstone of the Portland Oregon gaming community. This multi-faceted event will include an optional catered lunch, charity raffle, a card vendor, artist signings, and feature match recordings.

Sign Ups

To sign up for this event, fill out the ToC Sign Up Form. The email you use to complete this form will be added to this topdeck.gg event. Players will be added until we hit our cap of 128, and any further players will be added to our waitlist for the event. Players will submit their deck list through the topdeck.gg website after signing up for the event. Players are manually added to the topdeck.gg event after submitting a sign up form, so please allow a day or two for processing.

The event will cost $50 USD, paid in cash or Venmo at the event. Our decision to use cash allows us to avoid payment processor fees and donate more money to charity. This is a charity event and 100% of the collected money will be put into the event and the charity donation. Thank you for understanding and paying with cash!

Rules

The Tournament of Champions will be comprised of 50 minute Swiss rounds followed by a cut to top 8. The Swiss rounds will be based upon player attendance using the MTR, with the final Swiss round as a "Power Pairing". Power Pairing pairs strictly from the top of the standings down and may cause a rematch, but avoids awkward pair-up/pair-down situations which can occur at the end of Swiss rounds.

Phone usage is prohibited during matches except for Scryfall searches with your opponent, or private Scryfall searches with a judge present. Physical notes are allowed and recommended, such as for sideboard guides.

Rose City Premodern is dedicated to keeping a fair and fun playing environment at our events. Our friendly culture is an important part of our local scene, and we will maintain our zero tolerance policy for hateful speech, poor sportsmanship, or cheating at the Tournament of Champions.

Competitive REL

The Tournament of Champions will be run at Competitive Rules Enforcement Level. Competitive REL empowers our judges with more tools to fix game rules violations and play mistakes, and places the onus of proper play on both players to keep the game state correct.

While we wish to promote a fair tournament environment for the Tournament of Champions, we understand that Premodern is a community run format with certain cultures and customs at events. As such, the Tournament of Champions will explicitly allow

  • Gold Border and full color Proxy cards. No matter the composition of your deck, the cards must be indistinguishable when shuffled and sleeved.
  • Altered cards. We ask that you leave peel alters at home as these may be detectable in a sleeved deck, but otherwise we allow and encourage painted or drawn alters. As a reminder, the name and mana cost of the card must be legible.
  • Cards as tokens. Utilizing cards such as Scathe Zombies as a 2/2 zombie token is a common occurrence at Premodern events. When using a Premodern legal card as a token for your deck, we ask that you put the token card in a different colored sleeve from the rest of your deck. Notify a tournament official during check-ins and notify your opponent at the beginning of each match.
  • Using dice to track game resources. Pen and paper is highly recommended for tracking game states including life totals, floating mana, and storm count, but dice are allowed.
  • Phone usage for emergencies. If you need to use a phone during a match including while side boarding between games, please call a judge to your table before using your phone.

We highly encourage grace and good sportsmanship to all players at our events, regardless of rules enforcement level.

Prizing

The Tournament of Champions is a charity event. The winner of the event will choose a charitable 501c3 organization to receive the charity donation. The winner of the event will receive custody of the Rose Cup, an engraved trophy to stay in their possession until the following year.

The top placing players will receive store credit to Guardian Games in the form of gift cards. Guardian Games maintains a large Magic: the Gathering singles collection, sealed packs, board games, and more.
