Playtest Card Policy

An excerpt from Wizards of the Coast’s official statement “On Proxies, Policy and Communication” (https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/announcements/proxies-policy-and-communication-2016-01-14?fbclid=IwAR3UyZ32bYuAxgdPs6vCgChx6ETE4usoPS6gczaYd2-ouz443Q0F2e2y4rA):
“Our stated policy specifically applies to DCI-sanctioned events. Cards used in DCI-sanctioned events must be authentic Magic cards. The only exception is if a card has become damaged during the course of play in a particular event (for instance, a shuffling accident bends a card or a drink gets spilled); in that case a judge may issue a proxy for use only for the duration of that event so the player can continue playing.

Our stance on counterfeits is also clear: Wizards remains committed to vigorously protecting the Magic community from counterfeiters. We will remain vigilant for illegal activity, and we will continue to work quickly and decisively with law enforcement agencies around the globe to protect against the creation or distribution of counterfeit Magic cards. Additionally, we reiterate in the strongest terms possible that any individual or retailer who knowingly deals in counterfeits works against the best interests of the community. Wizards has eliminated and will continue to eliminate from the DCI and WPN anyone who knowingly distributes counterfeit cards.

What has gotten caught up in the confusion are playtest cards used outside of sanctioned DCI events. And the reason it has gotten confusing is because we've never really talked about them before. So let's do that.

A playtest card is most commonly a basic land with the name of a different card written on it with a marker. Playtest cards aren't trying to be reproductions of real Magic cards; they don't have official art and they wouldn't pass even as the real thing under the most cursory glance. Fans use playtest cards to test out new deck ideas before building out a deck for real and bringing it to a sanctioned tournament. And that's perfectly fine with us. Wizards of the Coast has no desire to police playtest cards made for personal, non-commercial use, even if that usage takes place in a store.

What we really care about is that DCI-sanctioned events use only authentic Magic cards, and that we stop counterfeits”

Best in the West is an unsanctioned event using third-party tournament software to run. Therefore playtest cards will be accepted. We want to make the event as accessible as possible to everyone in the community.

At the absolute minimum playtest must be colour-printed with official Wizards of the Coast MTG art (ie. art found on https://scryfall.com/) Acceptable playtest cards will include: Printed paper slips cut to size and placed in front of real MTG cards (eg. https://mtgprint.cardtrader.com/) MPC Autofill and similar websites

The only non-Wizards of the Coast alter art accepted will be your commander(s).

Using playtest cards in the form of paper slips in front of real MTG cards presents a potential risk for marking cards and cheating. In order to mitigate this risk we will make it a policy that a mixed deck will require its official cards be double sleeved (ie. outer and inner sleeved) whilst the playtest cards remain single sleeved. This will ensure sleeves are similar in thickness.

Please remember that a card should only be identifiable from its front face. If using printed paper in front of cards there must not be any slips sticking out the top of the sleeve, or any identifiable attributes such as card thickness. To mitigate this risk please refer to the above paragraph. A judge will be called if any issues arise and may result in penalties.

In Response

Thank you to Barlow and the team at In Response (https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61568075466031) for allowing us to use their space to host the tournament. In Response opened at the tail end of 2024 and quickly established itself as the premier LGS in Blacktown. Facilities include a toilet, kitchenette and all the snacks and drinks you’d need to keep you going during the day. In Response boasts a large collection of both singles and sealed MTG product at very competitive prices, so don’t be shy to send them a message about any last minute additions to your deck.

Whether you’re driving or taking public transport, In Response is easy to get to. If you’re taking public transport you want to take the 729 bus from Blacktown Station, get off at the Doonside Rd after Holbeche Rd stop, and just over 500 m down. If you’re driving there is a public car park right outside the LGS with ample car space. If driving and public transport is not an option, please don’t be afraid to reach out in Discord - there are plenty of people who are happy to carpool. We want to reduce all the barriers to participating in the tournament, whether its cost or distance.

Decklists

As part of playing at a Competitive REL all players will be required to submit a decklist through TopDeck. Decklists must be submitted using Moxfield as its format and finalised prior to the Player Meeting starting (ie. before 09:00am on 18/10/25). Players may be subject to random deck checks between rounds which will be conducted by the judge and TO. Any changes to Moxfield decklists after the cut-off time will be subject to penalties.

** Q&A**

I've signed up but I now need to drop! What do I do? Please message Migs immediately. If you can drop yourself from the event through TopDeck please do, otherwise we can do it for you on our end.

What if I'm too late to sign up and the event has reached capacity? We will have a waitlist. Please send Migs a message on Discord.

What are the food options around In Response? There are plenty of options around the LGS. Most of us go to the pub for lunch!

Please reach out on Discord if you have any other questions!
