Event Details

** PLEASE NOTE DATE CHANGE TO SEP. 21 DUE TO CONFLICTING EVENT **

Part of the TopDeck Championship Series (2025 Season)

The SeaToSkyMTG group will be hosting a Magic The Gathering cEDH (competitive Commander-format) Tournament at the Executive Suites Hotel & Resort located at 40900 Tantalus Road in Squamish on Saturday, September 21st from 10am-8pm. Pre-registration for this event is required (see below for details). This is event is open to everyone (not just Squamish locals) so feel free to invite friends from outside our community to attend; the more the merrier!

NOTE: This tournament is proxy-card friendly! (i.e. No "pay-to-win" here). See below in "Deck Construction" for details.

Registration/Location:

  • The tournament entry fee will be $35. This can be paid at time of registration via PayPal or you may defer payment to any time before event day and pay via Interac E-transfer (preferred) or PayPal to [email protected] (autodeposit enabled, no password required). You may also pay in cash on the day of the event. Onsite debit/credit payment will not be available on the day of the event.
  • A maximum of 48 players will be permitted to register for the tournament. We will be taking an alternate list after the tournament fills up in case of unexpected drops.
  • Doors open at 10am, rules briefing begins at 10:45am and tournament rounds start at 11am sharp. The tournament will run from 11am-8pm (or until we're done).
  • You must pre-register for this event using the Register button at the top of this page. Please don't leave this to the last minute as we use this info to properly prepare for the event. By registering, you are committing to come to the event; please don't register until you are sure you can attend, as this will potentially prevent others from registering. Registration requires you to have a TopDeck.gg account. If you don't have a TopDeck.gg account, you can create one for free via the Register link. After registering, this event will appear in the My Events section of your TopDeck.gg profile. Please make sure to supply your first and last name when registering as we have many folks with similar names.
  • After registering for the event, you are required to submit a decklist link from Moxfield.com that details the single Commander-format deck you intend to use in the tournament. To do this, find this event in your TopDeck.gg "My Events" section, then click the Submit Decklist button on the event and paste in the URL to your Moxfield-based deck. Your decklist info will be kept private until the event completes. If you do not supply a decklist before 10am on game day, you will not be permitted to participate. You may update the contents of your decklist until 10am on the day of the event, at which point your decklist will be locked and further changes will not be permitted.
  • Free parking is available at the hotel (no permit required). To get to the hotel, take Highway 99 northbound and exit at Garibaldi Way. Turn left on Tantalus Road and follow the road until you see the sign on the right for Executive Suites Hotel. Please park in the lots to the left or right of the main driveway.
  • The event will be hosted in the Garibaldi Room on the 2nd floor of the hotel. To get there, walk through the main lobby past the front desk and take the elevators on your left to the 2nd floor. Exit the elevators and turn right to reach the Garibaldi Room down the hall.
  • There is an on-site restaurant (Free Bird) and snack machines you may take advantage of for food/beverage. Coffee, tea and water will be provided. No alcoholic beverages are permitted.

Format/Rules:

  • We'll likely be playing 3 or 4 Swiss-style rounds (80 minutes each), followed by a round of play using a cut to the top 4 or 10 players. In the event of top 10 cut, the top 2 will move straight to the final table with the remaining 8 playing a round in two separate pods. The winners from each of the 2 pods will then move to the final round to determine the champion. Note that the number of rounds and top cut will change based on the number of registered participants, as we need to adhere to TopDeck guidelines for this (https://topdeck.gg/mtr-ipg-addendum).
  • All participants will be randomly assigned initial seating in 4-person pods at the start of the event. In subsequent rounds, pods will be generated based on accumulated stats. If a pod of 4 can't be formed, the remaining participants will receive a bye (automatic win) into the next round. Seats will be numbered within a pod; your seat number is determined by your order of player listing within a pod (i.e. the first player on the list sits in seat #1).
  • A QR code link will be provided onsite to enable you to track bracket matchups and attendee rankings.
  • Once seated at their pod, players may shuffle/cut their decks, resolve mulligans and draw their starting hand but round play should not be started until the tournament director starts the round timer.
  • Turn order is determined by the seat numbers on the bracket pairings (i.e. the first person listed for the pod goes first).
  • 5 points will be awarded to the winner of a game. If the round timer expires and a game isn't complete, then as soon as the current player passes their turn (even to begin taking an extra turn), the game will be declared a draw and all players in the game will be given 1 point.
  • If you leave your assigned pod during a game (and haven't been eliminated already), you will be assigned a "game loss" penalty and receive no points for that game, regardless of the outcome.
  • Players will not be permitted to concede; games must be played to conclusion. The exception to this rule is if a player successfully demonstrates to all remaining players in a pod that they can win the game via a combo or other inevitable chain of events.
  • When a game completes, please report the result immediately to the tournament director.
  • No outside resources (e.g. phones, cheat-sheets) are allowed to be used in-game. Players will be permitted to start each round with a piece of blank paper (or erasable "boogie board") and pencil/pen for making notes. These notes do not need to be revealed to other players, though a judge may request to review them at any time.
  • Judge(s) will be available for any in-game questions/rulings.
  • This tournament is being operated under the guidelines provided by TopDeck.gg (see https://topdeck.gg/mtr-ipg-addendum) so players will earn points for the 2025 Championship Series season, which starts Sep. 16th.

Deck Construction:

  • An unlimited number of proxy cards are permitted in your deck. If you decide to use proxy cards, please make sure they are complete with all original card details, legible by your opponents and otherwise indistinguishable from a regular Magic card. You may want to take advantage of the group proxy card purchases we do from a professional card printing company; see our Discord channel for details.
  • Please try to bring any token cards your deck may require as this helps avoid confusion during play. Moxfield can easily tell you which tokens are needed within their deck construction interface.
  • Sideboarding is not permitted; the deck you start with is the same deck you play all day.
  • Your deck must be sleeved for the event. Sleeves will be available for purchase at the event, if required.
  • No other outside restrictions are placed on your deck construction; as long as it adheres to current Commander format guidelines, it's acceptable. Bring your infinite combos, your 0-drop mana rocks...it's all good!

Prizes:

  • Prizes will be awarded at the end of the night, once the final table has completed their game.
  • 1st place: Mox Opal (borderless foil box-topper from Double Masters)
  • 2nd-4th: Lotus Petal (foil, from the "From the Vault: Exiled" box set)
  • 5th-??? (based on number of participants): Collector booster pack "priority pick"; in order of finishing rank, players pick a booster from those remaining. Some examples of available boosters will be Lord of the Rings Special Edition, Modern Horizons 3, Modern Horizons 2, Dominaria Remastered, Double Masters 2022, Commander Masters and Commander Legends.

Vendors:

  • House of Cards will be onsite with a booth selling MTG singles and sealed product. They are also accepting cards you'd like to sell/trade in, so make sure to bring in any excess cards you may have.

We will also have extra tables available for any others (fans, friends etc.) that wants to run their own side games (e.g casual Commander).
